Generative AI Student Policy — Mid-Pacific (Updated January 2026)

A ready-to-adapt student GAI policy from an independent school that has worked through the hard parts. Instead of one blanket rule, access scales by division: open use of leading models in high school, a guided platform in middle school, teacher-facilitated experiences in elementary, and Reggio-informed, teacher-directed use in preschool — so expectations grow alongside student independence.

The policy covers guiding principles for transparency, responsibility, and integrity; citation expectations tied to MLA and APA guidance; and plain-language data classification that distinguishes direct identifiers, indirect identifiers, and school proprietary data. Compliance is mapped to FERPA, COPPA, and CIPA. It also addresses territory many policies haven't reached yet: environmental impact, appropriate and inappropriate social-emotional use, likeness consent in media generation, overreliance, and a clear current stance on AI browsers, agents, and connectors — including specific systems where agent use is prohibited.

Roughly six pages, written for students and families in accessible language, with a stated practice of updating as tools change. Use it as a benchmark against your own policy or as a starting framework if you're drafting from scratch.
